A new album recorded after several shows in the summer of 2020. Enzo Favata The Crossing is a quartet with a progressive and contemporary attitude, which mixes complex layers and themes, a journey through space and time, jazz, urban atmospheres, African and Mediterranean roots, electronic, krautrock and many other different styles. There is special care and research in sound and in producing a balance of jazz interaction and dynamics, live recordings and studio sessions.
Enzo Favata, a maverick musican, producer, one of the most respected artists in the Italian jazz scene, has joined forces with Pasquale Mirra (vibraphone and midi marimba), Marco Frattini (drums) and Andrea Dominomi (electric bass and double bass). There is a special care and research in sound and production a balance between jazz interplay and dynamics, live recordings and studio sessions.
“The Crossing is the band I was looking for since a long time” tells Enzo Favata “And I needed jazz players that had a new feeling and approach to compositions. Concert after concert the quartet reached a new dimension and tightness, a real band in all its aspects and the main goal was to transfer this energy into an album. I achieved this through a mix of live recordings and additional production, overdubs of keyboards and analogue synths of the 70s and other guests that provided an orchestral feeling, like the strings from Salvatore Maiore and Maria Vicentini, the cinematic vocals of Ilaria Pilar Patassini, Marcello Peghin’s electric guitar and the Chinese master of guzheng, Zhan Qian. In the studio session in February 2021 we recorded two tracks, “For Turiya” written by Charlie Haden for Alice Coltrane and a new electronic hi-energy song, “Black Lives Matter” with sampled vocals from Malcolm X, Fela Kuti and Steve Biko, a strong stand against racism, a long time problem still actual, and dedicated to the struggle of black people.
The album opens with “Roots” by Ian Carr’s Nucleus, legend of British jazz rock and Canterbury sound, that leads to an original composition, “Turn”, featuring soprano sax, electronic instruments, vintage keyboards and organ, theremin and synths. “Salt Way” is an exploration of “fourth world music” as theorized by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno, without losing the key elements of jazz. “Oasis” is the final track, where in 12 minutes there is a summary of many elements of the album, the love for African music through the Ethiopian scales played with bass clarinet. The recording was mixed and mastered by senior sound engineer Alberto Erre, with his deep knowledge of analogue gear, filters and compressors and the result is a warm wall of sound that can hardly be obtained with contemporary digital plug ins.
The nonconformist musical multi-instrumentalist Enzo Favata brings a new band to the international scene.
The Sardinian saxophone wizard has an unquenchable spirit of adventure, and here he is with a new band that makes his music seem even more vital and essential.
It’s a fresh musical mix, with vibraphone, electric bass, synthesizer, live electronics and drums creating wonderfully light and springy atmospheres for Favata’s slender soprano and delightful deep burnished clarinet.
To interpret new suggestions and new sound colors, Favata brought together bassist and composer Andrea Dominomi, an expert in both electric bass and live electronics. On the vibraphone Pasquale Mirra, considered one of the masters of this instrument. Marco Frattini completes the quartet on drums and drum machine.
Music opens up to the world of new generations and to the sounds of current music, but always with a vision that confronts the magical realism of the poetics of the multi-instrumentalist Enzo Favata. The sound alternates between electronic music, jazz, cosmic rock, Ethiopian and Balinese sounds, in a kaleidoscope of colors and melodies.
In just over three years despite the pandemic the band has had great success in a Japanese tour, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Novara European Jazz Conference, a South American tour in November / December where he played in various cities of Brazil and at the Montevideo Jazz Festival, in 2020/21 has been invited to some of the most important European and Italian Jazz Festivals. With the release of an album reviewed all over the world, in 2022 he plays in the main Italian and European festival events
On her music she was defined by the Japanese press as:
„A visionary music with a wild Mediterranean taste, which blends with the hypnotic rhythms of Ethiopia and the Balinese atmospheres, mixed with a skillful use of electronics and improvisation. A unique poetic sound power, Italian jazz always reserves for us some big surprises, but this band is really brilliant ”
Ruby Rushton / Tenderlonious Quartet
Tenderlonious led jazz quartet Ruby Rushton are one of the leading, most forward- thinking and prolific bands to emerge from London’s thriving jazz scene. They have been at the forefront of the UK jazz scene since the release of their debut album ‘Two For Joy’ back in 2015, an album credited with introducing a new generation to jazz music in the U.K. Their music is rooted in the spiritual concepts of jazz heroes such as John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef, whilst adopting influences from hip hop, Afrobeat, bebop, jazz-funk and sounds of the U.K. underground. In 2019 the band released their 4th studio album and most successful to date ‘Ironside’, described by The Quietus as “vibrant, flawlessly executed and totally joyous throughout; it’s hard to ask for more”.
Ben LaMar Gay Quintet
Ben LaMar Gay’s critically-lauded 2018 break out Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun was more like a greatest hits than a debut album, as it compiled the best of the prolific but obscurity-prone Chicago native artist’s previously unreleased music. Open Arms to Open Us will be our first release of brand new, freshly baked tunes by Gay, a collection recorded entirely at International Anthem studios in Chicago between March-June 2021.
He is an artist that has been called “visionary” by the New York Times. Jeff Parker has called him “one of my favorite musicians on the planet today.” NPR says “there is no one universe for Ben LaMar Gay, he just sonic booms from one sound to another.” Gay lives up to all these statements and more, putting all his best feet forward on this new album. Fluently interweaving jazz, blues, ballads, R&B, raga, new music, nursery rhyme, Tropicalia, two-step, hip-hop and beyond in his most colorful and communicable work yet, it’s a beaming expression of Gay’s signature omni-genre, “Pan-Americana” brew.
Featured artists on the album include: OHMME singers Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, bassist/vocalist/arranger Ayanna Woods, multi-disciplinary Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza, poet A.Martinez, cellist Tomeka Reid, and vocalists Onye Ozuzu, Gira Dahnee, and Angel Bat Dawid.
